Intro

Why does the Resurrection matter?

Theological Answer

  1. Jesus is much more than a martyr
Rev 1:18: I am the Living One; I was dead, and behold I am alive for ever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades.
  2. Our Eternal Life is Secured
1Cor15:14 And if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith. 15 More than that, we are then found to be false witnesses about God, for we have testified about God that he raised Christ from the dead. But he did not raise him if in fact the dead are not raised. 16 For if the dead are not raised, then Christ has not been raised either. And in vs 22: For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive.
  3. We are also resurrected… starting right now
Rom 6:11 In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus.Rom 8:10 But if Christ is in you, your body is dead because of sin, yet your spirit is alive because of righteousness. 11 And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit, who lives in you.

Practical Example

But let’s look at a real-life example….
One mentioned in our passage:

James was one of Jesus’ half-brothers. Although they grew up with Jesus, they had a hard-time believing in Him.
(Mark 6:3 “Isn’t this the carpenter? Isn’t this Mary’s son and the brother of James, Joseph, Judas and Simon?)

John 7:5 – For even his own brothers did not believe in him.

Mark 3:20-21: Then Jesus entered a house, and again a crowd gathered, so that he and his disciples were not even able to eat. 21 When his family heard about this, they went to take charge of him, for they said, “He is out of his mind.”

They were antagonistic and even thought that Jesus was out of His mind!
Sometimes familiarity can breed contempt…
Can you imagine watching your half-brother being crucified? We don’t know when the penny dropped for James, but we do know that Jesus appeared to him. We don’t have the details, but Mary, James and his brothers join the church in Acts 1 and James becomes the leader of the Jerusalem church.
He had made a terrible mistake, he had been so wrong, but he was so forgiven!
Has familiarity led you to minimise the importance of Easter in your heart? Have you suddenly realised how mistaken you have been?
It’s not too late…
Just ask James!

Acts 1:14 They all joined together constantly in prayer, along with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers.

Conclusion – Personal Answer

Today the Resurrection is contested and doubted.

  • The doubt of sceptics
  • The doubt of academics
  • The doubt of believers

The doubt of believers – faith doubted by practice…
The familiarity that breeds contempt…
2Tim3:5 “A form of godliness that denies its power”

I’ve been there….
Going through the motions:
Come awake! Come awake!

TODAY: Consider this: Christ is Risen from the Dead.
– He holds the keys
– Our eternity is secured
– He wants to transform our now

James found it true – what about YOU!

After Benediction:

(Third Century Sermon by John Chrysostum)
Sung by Matt Maher: Christ is Risen from the Dead (Click here)

Let no one caught in sin remain
Inside the lie of inward shame
But fix our eyes upon the cross
And run to Him who showed great love
And bled for us
Freely You’ve bled for us

Christ is risen from the dead
Trampling over death by death
Come awake, come awake
Come and rise up from the grave
Christ is risen from the dead
We are one with Him again
Come awake, come awake
Come and rise up from the grave

Beneath the weight of all our sin
You bowed to none but heaven’s will
No scheme of hell, no scoffer’s crown
No burden great can hold You down
In strength You reign
Forever let Your church proclaim

Christ is risen from the dead
Trampling over death by death
Come awake, come awake
Come and rise up from the grave
Christ is risen from the dead
We are one with Him again
Come awake, come awake
Come and rise up from the grave

O death, where is your sting?
O hell, where is your victory?
O church, come stand in the light
The glory of God has defeated the night
O death, where is your sting?
O hell, where is your victory?
O church, come stand in the light
Our God is not dead
He’s alive! He’s alive!

Christ is risen from the dead
Trampling over death by death
Come awake, come awake
Come and rise up from the grave
Christ is risen from the dead
We are one with Him again
Come awake, come awake
Come and rise up from the grave
