Context: Emmanuel – AM GRA PM
Series: _
Title: Amen
Readings: 2Co1:18-20; Rev7:12

2Cor1:21 Now it is God who makes both us and you stand firm in Christ. He anointed us, 22 set his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.

2CO 1:18 But as surely as God is faithful, our message to you is not “Yes” and “No.” 19 For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was preached among you by me and Silas and Timothy, was not “Yes” and “No,” but in him it has always been “Yes.” 20 For no matter how many promises God has made, they are “Yes” in Christ. And so through him the “Amen” is spoken by us to the glory of God.

Rev7:12 “Amen!
Praise and glory
and wisdom and thanks and honor
and power and strength
be to our God for ever and ever.

Intro to Readings

What does “Amen” mean?

Comes from the Hebrew root “Aman” to be firm, confirmed, reliable, faithful, have faith, believe.

Main uses:

  1. May it be so…
    • Dt 27 – 12 uses – all dire curses
DT 27:15 “Cursed is the man who carves an image or casts an idol–a thing detestable to the LORD, the work of the craftsman’s hands–and sets it up in secret.” Then all the people shall say, “Amen!”
    • 1Cor14:16 If you are praising God with your spirit, how can one who finds himself among those who do not understand say “Amen” to your thanksgiving
  2. Jesus used it “Amen, Amen” – Truly Truly – Verily Verily
    “You’d better believe this….”
Matthew 18:3 And he said: “I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.
  3. As the end of a Doxology. (Say the “Amen’s” with me)
    • When the Ark of the Covenant was carried into Jerusalem.
1CH 16:34 Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his love endures forever.
35 Cry out, “Save us, O God our Saviour; gather us and deliver us from the nations,
that we may give thanks to your holy name, that we may glory in your praise.”
36 Praise be to the LORD, the God of Israel, from everlasting to everlasting.
Then all the people said “Amen” and “Praise the LORD.”
    • Psalms at the end of some of the sub-divisions – Amen and Amen!
    • 1 Tim 6:15 God, the blessed and only Ruler, the King of kings and Lord of lords, 16 who alone is immortal and who lives in unapproachable light, whom no one has seen or can see. To him be honor and might forever. Amen.
    • 2 Tim 4:18 The Lord will rescue me from every evil attack and will bring me safely to his heavenly kingdom. To him be glory for ever and ever. Amen.
    • Eph 3:21 to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.
  4. After a Benediction
PHP 4:23 The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. Amen.

But what does it mean for us?

We’ve been praying the Lord’s prayer all year.

  • Our Father
  • Heaven, Hallowed
  • He has a Kingdom plan and His will is the best thing for us.
RO 12:1 Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God–this is your spiritual act of worship. 2 Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is–his good, pleasing and perfect will.
  • Bread, Forgiveness and Trespasses
  • His power and glory

So when we say AMEN – we’re really saying
“God is good and we believe He has done wonderful things and that He can do incredible things!”
